Charity Barbecue Success

We have now added up all the money and we have raised the staggering amount of 2,207.00€ from the last Saturday’s charity barbecue.

Some money also came in from donations from people who couldn’t make it on that day but wanted to help, we can’t thank you all enough for your support.

Spring Barbecue

Our ever-popular Spring Barbecue will be held on Saturday 18th May from 2pm onwards at the Albergue de Tegoyo in Conil. Tickets are 15€ and are available from Jackie (676 509 443) or Sue (619 042 153). There will be live music, cake and bric-a-brac stalls and a bouncy castle. It’s always a great family day out, so please come and join us!

Thunderbolt Charity Boxing Night

A great thank you to Niall Black and Jonathan O’Brien for organising the Thunderbolt Charity Boxing Night on Saturday 13th April. Many thanks to the brave contestants, NTM helpers, the donations and help with the ring and food. It was a great night and raised the knock-out sum of £2,147 – it is likely to be repeated in the autumn.

Nyamathi Update

A lot has happened in the Nyamathi area of the highlands of Kenya in which NTM is still involved. It is an area of extreme poverty which belongs to past centuries in Europe, but is still very widespread in large parts of Africa.

We owe it to Anne Wadsworth, that Nelsons, the international pharmaceutical Company that promotes natural remedies worldwide, has provided the funds for an entirely new medical clinic which includes a maternity ward of twenty beds. With Nelsons and with Naivasha Rotary we are making a difference to the lives of thousands of families in that remote area of Kenya. Their houses are
made of mud and sticks. There are no roads as we know them, no taps with running water, no light switches, no loos, no showers, and of course no TV. They struggle to grow enough food to feed their families.

When they go to the new school we have just built, when they go to the new medical clinic, they will be making a dream come true. It is a dream which owes much to ‘An Adopt a Village Scheme’ in which Richard McGonnell and Roddy Benjamin continue to play key roles. The challenge left with us is beds, lockers, curtains, desks and the creation of two kitchens, the first to replace the totally inadequate one (shown above) in the primary school, the other for the new secondary school.

Sunset Cruise

We have planned another sunset cruise and we would love you to join us, it is of course in aid of the new school and clinic that Niños del Tercer Mundo are building in Kenya.

The date is Saturday September 22ndand the boat leaves from Puerto Calero at 6pm and comes back at 8pm the ticket price is 20€ and that will include wine, beer, soft drinks and nibbles.

The boat is a different one from last year and takes 150 people, so we have decided to share the trip with another local charity called Calor y Café. They are another very deserving charity which help the homeless in Lanzarote,.Kevin and Claudine Roper are major fundraisers for this charity and have always helped the Niños del Tercer Mundo too.

Work on the health clinic we are building as part of an ‘Adopt a Village’ scheme in Kenya has now started. The Ministry of Health has given its official approval, and all the necessary pieces of the puzzle are finally in place. The project, managed in association with Rotary International, and funded by Nelsons at a cost of 39,500€, will create a fully-equipped medical centre serving a community of around 30,000 people. The positive effects the clinic will have on the local people are incalculable.

We’ll be charting the progress here with regular updates from our Kenyan Field Officer, Richard McGonnell.

Costa Sal Barbecue

We raised 1200€ from the barbecue at Costa Sal on Saturday 26th May. Thanks again to everyone who helped and made it possible and thank you everyone who came, it was a great day and we will keep you informed of how the school and clinic is going so you can see what your kind donations have helped us accomplish for the children of Kenya.

Chinese Meal and Auction

The Chinese meal which took place at the ‘Crispy Duck’ in Puerto Calero on Friday 16th March was fully booked. Good food and good company was enjoyed by all. The event, together with an auction which was held on the night, was a great success and raised just over 1,000 euros. Thanks as always go to all who attended.

Mr & Mrs Randall’s Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Randall, friends of our treasurer Goretti Martinón, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Tuesday 21st February. Instead of presents, they asked their guests to make a donation to NTM – 17 guests gave a total of 220 euros. We are immensely grateful for Mr and Mrs Randall’s generosity and that of their guests, and of course we would like to congratulate them on reaching their golden wedding anniversary!
