Alan Gandy – Walking the 7 Islands

Alan walked the length of Lanzarote last year, raising a fantastic 1300 euros in the process; half of which he donated to NTM and half to the Rose Road Centre in the UK, which supports severely disabled children. This year he’s upped the ante again and is planning on walking across the seven main Canary Islands, and once more is kindly donating the sponsorship money to NTM and Rose Road.

In 2011 British ex-pat Alan Gandy walked the length of Lanzarote and raised over £1300 for Charity. This year, on April 7th 2012 he starts another walk – this time across the 7 main islands that make up the Canaries.

Having said after last years walk he’d never do it again, Alan soon changed his mind after getting such a thrill out of both the sense of achievement he got from the challenge itself, and that in doing it he was able to help others.

Alan says: “Obviously I enjoy the long distance walking in itself, and though not everyone’s idea of a ‘holiday’, it is mine. It’s a challenge, and hard work – so if whilst doing these things I can raise awareness, and hopefully some money for extremely worthy causes, as I feel the charities I support are – that’s a massive bonus!”

He adds, “Last years walk of Lanzarote wasn’t too bad, this year I’m not underestimating the 400 to 500km involved – and I am well aware that this is going to be much, much more difficult.”

Alan expects to complete the walk in between two and three weeks, but has said that if it takes longer, then “short of a major injury, I’m not coming home until I’ve finished!”

The ‘Siete Islas’ walk has taken a lot more in terms of planning than the previous event, and Alan has been training for a number of months with Lanzarote based Personal Trainer, Mitch Mitchell. He has also received financial support to cover equipment and travel expenses from currency exchange company AxiaFX.co.uk, and additionally the Canary Island ferry company Naviera Armas have donated free crossing between the islands.

Alan is supporting the same charities he did last year – Niños Tercer del Mundo, the Lanzarote based charity that undertakes projects in the Third World; and The Rose Road Association a UK charity that provides support to disabled children and their families.

Starting in Orzola, Lanzarote, the planned finishing point of the walk will be El Hierro via Fuerteventura, Gran Canara, Tenerife, la Gomera and La Palma.

2nd Padel Kid’s Tournament

Padel Kids celebrated it’s second children’s tournament last weekend on the padel courts of Apartamentos Santa Rosa in Costa Teguise. 60 keen young padel competitors shared a fun and competitive weekend together. There were 5 different categories for all children from 8 to 18 years old; 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and 1st and 2nd female categories.

For every participant in the tournament, Padel Kids has donated €5 to NTM, giving a total of €300! Various sponsors such as Cabrera Medina, El Ayuntamiento de Teguise, Más Deportes, Mesa Sport, El Cruce, Coca-Cola and Santa Rosa itself, kindly supported this magnificent event. A big thank you goes to the organiser, Pauline Saenz.

Christmas Dinner Dance 2011

Our Christmas Dinner Dance was held at the Iberostar Hotel, Puerto Calero, on December 3rd. We have come to expect a very high standard of service and dinner party food from the hotel management, and they never fail us. Again Max managed the music brilliantly and an impersonation of Michael Jackson was a delight. So many thanks for the raffle prizes, the sellers, the organisers, the helpers. The money raised was €1,249.

Annual Christmas Fayre

The annual Christmas Fayre this year took place in the Tias Sociedad on Sunday November 27th. It was very well attended, especially by the children. Whole families were brought in off the street by the ‘Oye, Oye’ bell ringing of Fran. Father Christmas had to give up his camel but was so popular, Ron Ballantyne and his printing team, Lesley and Betty, were working overtime. Children wandered everywhere with painted faces by Freya; Kelly Noble sang, and Lyndsey Carroll organised Zumba dancing. Max was in charge of the music and round the whole arena were the stalls. We cannot thank too much all those who set them up, manned them and provided all the food, traditional mulled wine and gifts. €1,142 was raised for our children’s charity.

Another Great Sunset Cruise

A big thank you to Roisin and Wes for the wonderful Sunset Cruise on the Catalanza Catamaran which took place on September 29th. Just over 50 people had a brilliant evening with canapes donated by 3 restaurants in Puerto Calero: The Amura Restaurant, The Taverna and Fazz Indian Restaurant. We raised 1,385€. Thank you to Claire Atherton who designed the posters and tickets, and to everyone who came.

Kid’s Pádel Tournament

More than 100 children took part in Pádel Kids’ first tournament, celebrated in the Centro Deportivo Fariones at the beginning of October. Children of all ages and from other islands, such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria, enjoyed a weekend of competition, music and pádel exhibitions. The children participating in the tournament raised 316€ for NTM, for which we are very grateful. Padel Kids’ director, Pauline Sáenz Smith, assures us that pádel tennis in Lanzarote, and the Canaries, will be well represented over the coming years.

Alan Gandy Finishes Walk

We’re full of admiration for Alan who successfully completed his marathon 2 day, 72 kilometre walk on 4th / 5th February from Orzola in the north, to the lighthouse at the most southerly point of the island. Alan has raised around 1,300€ in sponsorship, of which he is donating half to NTM and the other half to the Rose Road Centre in the UK, which provides support to severely disabled children and their families. A great achievement and a big boost for the Charity’s finances – thanks Alan!

Christmas at Costa Sal

We had a brilliant night at Costa Sal on Saturday December 11th 2010. Geraldine and Robbie and all their staff worked so hard to give us all a fantastic night to remember. A mulled wine reception started the evening off, followed by a sit down 3 course meal, which it has to be said was excellent. Then entertainment followed with the fabulous Soul Commitments and Konfetti.

3 euros was kindly donated from each ticket sale and a raffle raised a further 653.50 euros, making a total of 1,036 euros - making it a great night for the charity.

Thank you to everyone who donated prizes and thanks to Geraldine and Robbie for making it possible and giving us all a night to remember.

Christmas Dinner Dance

Our Christmas Dinner Dance at the Iberostar Costa Calero, Puerto Calero was a great success joined by over 100 Guests. Our evening started on the terrace for a cocktail, then we dined in the Restaurant El Puntal where the fine wine and conversation flowed. A delicious avocado and bacon salad followed by the excellent buffet of salt baked salmon and roast pork and so many salads the choice was endless, plus a scrumptious selection of pastries and ice creams for dessert.

Entertainment was provided by Soul Station, who rocked the room; everyone had great time and a good old dance. The entertainment continued with DJ Mark, who had us all dancing until the wee small hours. Over 2,000 Euros was raised for children in the 3rd world, thus enabling us to provide children in Kenya with facilities for more classrooms. A fantastic night for those that attended, so good to see all our regular supporters and it was fabulous to see so many new faces.

A big thank you from the committee at Ninos Del Tercer Mundo make the evening a huge success.

Christmas Fayre

On Sunday 28th of November we held our annual Christmas Fayre in the market in Tías. Father Christmas (who arrived by camel) was in residence, having his photograph taken with lots of local children and giving out presents.

The event was attended by an amazing number of local people who came in droves to start their Christmas shopping! Cakes, cards, handmade jewellery, Christmas table decorations, beauty products, and handmade soaps were amongst the items on offer, and we raised over 2,500€ for the children of Kenya—which are the current focus of our efforts.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes or their valuable time in order to help us. We would also like to thank singer, Kelly Noble, and the Top Catz dancers for the fabulous entertainment they provided. The Christmas Hamper was won by Bernie from ‘9 lives’, another local charity. Thanks go to everyone who attended the event.
