NTM End of Year Message

December 27th, 2015|News|

To all our Associate Members and supporters our sincere thanks for making our fund raising efforts in 2015 a success story. It has been a special year. We get asked, why send money to Kenya when there are homeless families and real poverty even on this relatively rich island. The answer is simple.

It is one thing to queue up for food at a warehouse in Arrecife run by Sister Ana, or one of the Caritas centres. It is another to be involved in the building of schools and health centres which have not been and would never be provided by local government. Thousands of families live in the mountainous rift valley with no amenities, no roads, no electricity, no piped water or drainage. We began with children’s education.

Tomaini School had two hundred children who had to sit on wooden planks balanced on chunks of rock. To write anything they had to kneel in the dust and use the plank of wood as a desk. They had a disgusting loo, a hole in the ground, and no water. NTM provided water and desks for Tomaini and several other schools and rebuilt part of another school. Every year a lot was done […]

Kenya Update

December 17th, 2015|News|

Farah, our Kenya Field Officer – pictured here in a pink top – has written to update us on the progress of our work in Kenya:

I would like to inform you that my visits to the Nelson Health Clinic in Nyamathi were wonderful (as usual!). Administration and management is efficient in terms of service and availability. However, the rate of births at the maternity ward has dropped drastically over the last 3 months and the most recent birth took place just off the highway in a public vehicle at the end of October! I have attached some images with this email showing state of the road from the highway down to the clinic – it’s almost impossible for the vehicles to pass through. The staff is working on writing up a proposal, so I was wondering if you can give me advise on this matter. Secondly, they wish to pursue a de-worming community out-reach but have no supplies to do so. The government side is lacking in providing medicines and equipment on time so, the clinic lacks sufficient supplies of medicines.

Christmas Fayre

December 1st, 2015|News|

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who helped on the day and also to those who came on the Saturday, which proved to make life easier on the Sunday. Thanks to Fermin for all the lugging of stuff! Also to the other charities who helped set up the tables and gave support.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and most stall holders have booked for next year.

It could not have been done without all the support that you very kindly gave me. An emotional time for me, the way people can come together to make such a successful event, with thoughts of why we are doing it and who will benefit from it. It was tough going sometimes but I remind myself, nowhere near as tough as the lives of some others in the world, especially those whom we are helping in Kenya.

Rosemary sold out of mince pies very quickly, absorbed by delicious mulled wine which went straight to my head.
Jill had a ‘smashing’ time on the Tombola stall.
Ned, as always, supporting throughout the day, often acting on the spur of the moment, whilst developing photos.
Max had Chrismas melodies playing and announced Santa’s arrival.
Bonney, Cara and Sammy had the kitchen under perfect […]

We are particularly grateful for the 3 stalwarts manning the barbecue: Sebastian, Simon & Suso.

Paul & Jackie.

Salad helpers Sammy & Trudy and musicians Fermin, Cristian & Charlie.

Stall holders Cleofe and family, Lee & Rebecca, Elliot & Patricia, Abbey & Oscar.

And of course to the trustees Jill, Ned and Julie.

Valentine’s Night Dinner

February 16th, 2015|News|

We began Valentine’s Night with high hopes. Altogether we counted on 50 people including Robert, the musician. Then some people got lost, others fell sick, another group never turned up and we ended up with 38 people, but they must be among the most generous 38 on the island. With the auction, the raffle and the donations we banked 1,010€.

Unfortunately Sue was ill so the effective organiser on the night was Julie, helped by Alan, who did the auction, Jane, Sammy and Jan.

It was a happy and successful night. The food as usual was excellent, the wine unstoppable and the music just right.

Thanks to everyone for making it successful and to the hotel for their generosity.
